This memorial forest was opened on 24th April 2010 by the Worshipful Mayor of Bury and the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester. The planting area is named after the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and the opening date coincided with the regiments Battle of Gallipoli honour celebration which was awarded for the regiment's gallant actions during the battle in World War I.

Anyone from the community can have a memorial tree planted at fusilier's meadow. The planting area benefits from having a dedicated car park and excellent public transport links via the metrolink.

The whole site is enclosed with a post and rail fence and a number of community events have taken place over the years as part of our 'Friends of the Forest' scheme, which has led to the establishment of a wildlife and pollinator friendly hedge around the memorial forest as well.

The planting area also has a small wildflower meadow where between May and July visitors can admire lovely proliferations of Northern Marsh Orchid (Dactylorhiza purpurella), Red Clover (Trifolium pratense) and Birds Foot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus).

The memorial forest also hosts a Copse of Mix Fruit Trees that form a Memorial Orchard dedicated to those Fusiliers who have lost their lives whilst serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, Northern Ireland and other conflicts since the end of World War 2.

Life for a Life planting areas are natural environments where we encourage wildlife and plantlife to flourish, as such additional items should not be added to the tree or the space around it, especially as they can cause damage to the tree. Please be aware that any prohibited items left on or around memorial trees will be removed.
